It seems that everywhere you turn this week, all you hear about is the federal debt ceiling debate. If I hear "Gang of 6", "default", or "Boehner" one more time, I might explode. Take a break from the looming national crisis and brush up on the legislation that's being talked about in the states!

Rhode Island passes civil union bill, but should we be applauding?

Rhode Island is the latest state to allow same sex couples to enter into a civil union. On the surface this is good news, especially after the incredible victory for marriage equality the LGBT community scored in my original home state, New York. Of course when you begin to dig below the surface you begin to find all that’s wrong with the passage of the Civil Union bill.

Ariz. legislator channels Michelle Pfeiffer in "Dangerous Minds"

Republican state Senators failed last week, despite valiant efforts, to pass some serious nativist bills.

Best effort goes to Lori Klein for staging a melodrama straight out of "Dangerous Minds" by reading a letter about a substitute teacher stunned and appalled by his class full of wanna-be gang memers.

Not only did the students refuse to say the pledge of allegiance, they also freely admitted that they were all illegal immigrants.
