Ohio: Next for Gay Marriage?

No, Ohio is not going to exchange rings with California.

On Thursday, the Ohio Ballot Board approved language on a proposed constitutional amendment to allow same sex marriage. Now, Ohio’s Freedom to Marry Coalition just has to get the 385,253 signatures needed to get the amendment on the ballot. They are shooting for November 2013.

Rhode Island passes civil union bill, but should we be applauding?

Rhode Island is the latest state to allow same sex couples to enter into a civil union. On the surface this is good news, especially after the incredible victory for marriage equality the LGBT community scored in my original home state, New York. Of course when you begin to dig below the surface you begin to find all that’s wrong with the passage of the Civil Union bill.

Even though both the state House and Senate flipped to Republican control, Democrat Mark Dayton won a close election for Governor. Through threat of his veto pen, he's been able to prevent the kind of attacks on the middle class that we've seen in states like Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan -- until now.
