Florida

With 29 Electoral College votes Florida increases its prominence as the largest swing-state to determine the road to the White House. Florida is “left-leaning” by voter registration, but its State Legislature has been Republican since 1996. This is the same State Legislature that handed the presidency to George W. Bush in 2000. This is also the same Legislature that drafted “Stand Your Ground” – a model for ALEC gun legislation across the country.

All is not lost to Republicans in Florida; the state’s demographics are swinging to a more progressive future. Minority populations are growing, and more young people are choosing to stay and raise their families in Florida. There is a shift in focus from liberal South Florida to the swing I-4 corridor. This is a perfect time to build a bench in Florida.
Progressive Majority’s long-term goal is to build on our base within the major urban areas of Florida and go beyond the South Florida strongholds. We look to take the I-4 corridor out of the swing column and have the area’s elected officials reflect its growing progressive population. We will help the progressive leaders in the rural areas share the message that progressive values are American values. With Progressive Majority, Florida will be able to regain control of its future.
